Yeah, I’m thinking it too. What in the name of jumping Jehosaphat is that?

Well, ask yourself this question. What would you do if you had, say, a bit of time on your hands. And 1,100 die-cast cars, 13 train sets, a bucket load of steel, aluminium, copper wire, plastic, wood, Lego, Dado cubes, glass, stone, paint, rubber and adhesives?

The answer, for artist Chris Burden anyway, was to spend four years creating this Gordian knot of engineering.

Nipping into the museum to get your head together and away from the bonkers LA traffic, you’ll be greeted by the sound of, er, bonkers traffic – this time from the die-cast cars spinning all around the structure, which is taller than a man. It even has its own traffic warden, in the form of a museum worker in a pit stop jumpsuit.

And you thought your job was important…

Metropolis II is on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
