That hasn't deterred the British brand, though; deciding that a standard paint job and interior didn't do the Exige S justice, it’s spiced it up with a livery and trim inspired by its Formula 1 team. Black and gold are the predominant colours in the LF1's interior and exterior styling, harking back to the iconic Lotus livery of the 1970s and 1980s – with flecks of gold across the dash as well as on 17-inch front and 18-inch rear alloys.

There's a modern touch, too, with red accents across the roof, the front bumper and underneath the spoiler. It also brings a not inconsiderable supercharged 3.5-litre V6 to the party, as well as Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo tyres and two-piece, high-performance brake discs. The best thing about this modern classic? Only 81 are being made – one for each of Lotus's Grand Prix wins. A reminder, if needed, that despite the makeover, it's not all about the looks.
