CityBird's Bar of the Week: The Jugged Hare

If taxidermy and fine wine is your bag, then The Jugged Hare might well be the best pub launch since Corney & Barrow marched onto City drinking scene.

Newly-opened The Jugged Hare, on trendy Chiswell Street, is the latest addition to Ed and Tom Martin’s chain of gastropubs (other name drops include the Chiswell Street Dining Rooms, The Gun, The White Swan).

If you’re a Barbican or Moorgate worker, Chiswell Street just got a lot cooler. The Chiswell Street Dining Rooms launched last summer (their food is sublime) and with launch of The Jugged Hare, suits should have no trouble getting on the Thursday-night party parade along the street.

Taxidermy isn’t for some, but the pub boasts a selection of stuffed animals are positioned behind the bar, and there’s a huge elk’s head pinned to a wall – a homage to the restaurant’s distinctly gamey focus.

Wine is taken seriously here. Not only are there regular wine events (food and wine pairing, emerging wine country tasting, wine flights etc), there are wines available by the glass from a ‘by the glass’ machine. Beer lovers can fill their boots will a bespoke Jugged Hare pale ale.

City drinking at its finest, followers.
