There are certain nights that can only end by talking about pensions with a burlesque dancer, while slurping a liquid marshmallow and vodka cocktail. Such is the style at Volupté’s newly-made-over Bon Bon bar, where huge jars of sweets and lollipops sit along the bar, and the drinks are saccharine-sweet.
Known mainly for its burlesque shows and afternoon teas, Volupté has replicated the vintage style upstairs in the bar, with huge slouchy cushions and pink loveheart pillows. It’s sleazy-cum-speakeasy, and you might just bump into said burlesque dancer – Bettsie Bon Bon – lounging around at a table.
The cocktail list runs from a ‘Miss Marshmellow’ – vanilla and raspberry vodka cream served with liquid marshmallow, ‘Gummi Worm’ – raspberry vodka, blue curacao and a gummy sweet at the bottom, and the ‘Hard Candy’ – apple vodka, peach schnapps and a sweet bracelet.
Less sweet choices range from a butterscotch ‘Toffee Tease’, and a classic ‘Terry’s Old Fashioned’, which really is just pure booze. Even champagne cocktails are served with a twist: one with a love heart sweet, and another with absinthe (deadly).
Seeing as the only food to soak it up with is a giant lollipop or a bag of lemon sherbets, go easy on the cocktails. They taste like Haribo, but the hangover the next day might not just be a sugar rush…
