London-Dorchester

If Mayfair is the HQ of luxury in London then the Dorchester is its luxurious bomb shelter. Built in the early 1930s by concrete magnate Sir Malcolm McAlpine (son of Sir Robert ‘Concrete Bob’ McAlpine), when the job was finished the client was unable to pay for the construction works and so the McAlpine company took possession of the building.

As a result of its then-revolutionary concrete construction, during WWII the hotel was renowned for its blast-resistant safety and played host to Churchill and Eisenhower, who both had their own suites.

Now owned by the rather fabulous Dorchester Collection, the hotel boasts three of London’s finest restaurants: The Grill (a venerable British institution and ideal location for blokey lunches), Alain Ducasse (recipient of a third star this year) and China Tang (for dates with models).

The bedrooms upstairs are everything a weary hedge fund manager could wish for: elegant, opulent and discreet. There are also function rooms so impressive they would reassure the most jaded investor: the Penthouse & Pavillion is ideal for small gatherings and is just about the most pleasant private dining room in the world. As a one-stop shop for all your five-star needs, there is nothing to touch it in Mayfair.

The Dorchester – so much more than a safe pair of hands. Grand Dame, we who are about to hedge salute you.
