The Grand Tour of Mediterranean Hotels

The Grand Tour of Mediterranean Hotels

Martin Deeson takes it upon himself to visit as many of the best hotels in the Mediterranean as possible. Here are his top picks.

The Mediterranean is an area that means different things to different people. To the cultural among us it is the cradle of civilization. To worldly gourmands it is the home of some of Europe’s finest cuisines. And to everyone else it is the perfect holiday destination: a region of (almost guaranteed) sun, long days on the beach and even longer siestas after superb lunches.

If you have a yearning to escape these grey shores for somewhere where the pace of life dances to a slower beat, then check out Square Mile’s pick of four Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) each from a different Mediterranean country – but all clustered round the edge of Europe’s own idyllic sea.

Hôtel Belles Rives, Juan les Pins, French Riviera
A renowned art deco mansion, with stunning sea views, the hotel used to be home to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby. A little of the Jazz Age decadence survives in this chic and sophisticated temple to European glamour on Cap d’Antibes.

Casa Angelina Lifestyle, Amalfi Coast, Italy
For a taste of a modernist, cool, white, minimalist take on Mediterranean living, the Casa Angelina with its stunning views across to Capri is the destination for the style conscious. Charter the hotel motor boat for a trip to Naples, Pompeii or Ischia and end the day under the night sky in the hotel’s rooftop restaurant.

Canaves Oia, Santorini, Greece
Carved straight out of the volcanic rock cliff face, the suites at Canaves Oia are some of the most romantic accommodation imaginable. The contrast between thick dark rock and the infinity pools hanging over the Mediterranean below add up to one of the most spectacular locations in the world from which to watch an incredible sunset.

Club Marítimo de Sotogrande, Sotogrande Marina, Spain
With Gibraltar in the distance and the yachting marina in the foreground, this Andalusian beach hotel offers an unusual pull for those weary of the sunbed scene: the nearby world class polo practicing facilities.
