Excited investors have gathered to witness what has been described as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch Spain disappear down a gigantic black hole.

“It’s incredibly rare to be able to experience this,” said one investor. “We might not see this again until next month with Portugal or Italy.”

Spain started edging towards the black hole early yesterday after excited observers noticed a trail of lies appearing to come from its finance ministry.

“The lies were unmistakeable,” said one observer, “at first you could see a trickle of small white ones but then they increased in number into absolute whoppers such as ‘Spain won’t need a bail-out’ and ‘Everything is going to be fine’.”

Observers were urged to cover their eyes to reduce the potential impact of seeing astronomical sums of money being lost.

Eye-witnesses described Spain as appearing like a small black dot moving deeper into a vast ocean of unrecoverable debt.

“It was amazing,” said one. “You could clearly see Spain trying to access financial markets before disappearing into the darkness of the Van Rompuy ringpiece.”

Analysts hope that the observed transit will help them as part of a longer term plan to try and find any sign of common sense in the eurozone.

The disappearance of Spain into the black hole culminated in a spectacular light display as all the lights in the country were switched off.

“It was very colourful, like a meteor shower,” said one investor, moved to tears. “But it actually felt like the whole of Europe had been sprayed by a golden shower.”
