Euro 2012: The Sequel

The cream of the crop rise to the top... not always, says Pete Simpson.

There are some things in football that are guaranteed: Cristiano Ronaldo will fail to turn up on the international stage, Tony Hibbert will never play for England, and at some point during a tournament Gary Lineker will make a comment about the German’s always getting to the final.

This time, Lineker was proved to be wrong yet again as Germany crashed out following a 2-1 loss to Italy. Mario 'That Lunatic' Balotelli scored both goals for the Italians to set up a repeat of the group game which polarised opinion so much, with it's intelligence and lack of running around like headless chickens.

As the outstanding team from Euro 2012, Germany should've gone through; but football has very little to do with merit and everything to do with doing - and when it mattered, the Italians performed. It would've been great  to see a Spain v Germany final. Could the German's vibrant attack have conquered Spain's patient approach? It's disappointing we won't find that out; but, then again, it's kind of satisfying that a Spain v Italy final will annoy a lot of Talksport listeners and Sun readers who demand more passion and less skill.

We hope the pain this Portugal fan felt has been slightly lessened by the knowledge he has the best hat at Euro 2012.
