This Friday, 90s game show The Crystal Maze returns to our TV screens on Channel 4 and will be hosted by new Maze Master, Richard Ayoade.
As per the original format, contestants will face mental and physical challenges and will navigate the Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Futuristic zones of the maze to the amusement of the general public. But this time around, they will be wearing costumes designed by British menswear designer, Simon Carter.
Outfits, created in an East London factory, will be both style focused and practical and take inspiration from the Le Mans racing jumpsuit.
Speaking about the contestants' outfits, Carter says: “I took my inspiration from my love of 1950s Le Mans car races for the jumpsuits and added a modern twist to make them distinctive and recognisable.”
For the Maze Master, the jury's still out on whether he'll don a leopard print overcoat. What we do know is that outfits will feature bold colours and floral prints along with knitted silk ties. Carter describes this aesthetic as, “geography teacher with a splash of colour”.
We're guessing the show will be more of an education in statement dressing and skill rather than globalisation though. But who knows. This is the Crystal Maze we're talking about.
